Siu-Kit Lau, Ph.D., C.Eng. (Acoustics Research)
It speaks highly of an individual when his success is achieved through versatility in diverse areas of discipline. Similarly, Dr. Siu-Kit Lau has demonstrated his excellence in a wide array of fields, seamlessly adapting to different roles and achieving numerous accomplishments in the process.
For more than 20 years, Dr. Lau has equipped himself with hands-on expertise as an industry engineer and manager; excelling in the fields of architectural design, green buildings, acoustics research, noise control, and high performance buildings/systems. Aside from engineering, Dr. Lau has also made a name for himself as a competent educator and researcher; with in-depth background in administration, program and curriculum design, and research project management.
Dr. Lau graduated from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 1997, with a Bachelor’s degree in Building Services Engineering. He received his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Acoustics in 2003. Prior to taking up his doctoral program, Dr. Lau worked in the building services engineering industry as a consultant engineer at Daniel Chan & Associates Ltd. in Hong Kong. In 2001, he assumed the role of an application manager at Acron International Technology Ltd. in Hong Kong. Dr. Lau expertly designed environmental systems—acoustic, energy-efficient, and indoor air quality systems—for the company, which was established under the entrepreneurship program of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Dr. Lau accomplished several contributions to the company. He also drove the efforts for new business procurement in the acoustic and energy industries, including energy audit projects.
In 2002, Dr. Lau worked at Emerson Climate Technologies as a sound and vibration engineer. He assumed the responsibility of managing the industrial research and development (R&D) projects; as well as analyzing and devising solutions to product design, with particular emphasis on mechanical noise and vibration in industrial air conditioning and refrigeration systems. During his tenure, Dr. Lau developed numerous R&D approaches and methodologies. From 2005 to 2006, Dr. Lau joined Johnson Electric Industrial Manufactory, Ltd. in Hong Kong, as an assistant manager of R&D and a member of Center of Excellence. From 2004 to 2009, he was a visiting lecturer and an assistant professor in the Department of Building Services Engineering at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in Hong Kong.
From 2009 to 2013, Dr. Lau has been an assistant professor at The Charles W. Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in Omaha, Nebraska. He has demonstrated his expertise in research, heading numerous researches, including A Combined System for Water Heating, Space Heating and Cooling, and Wastewater/Rain Water Reuse; Advanced Decentralized Water/Energy Network Design for Sustainable Infrastructure; and Effects of the Acoustic Environment on Speech Comprehension by English-as-a-Second-Language Listeners. His research works have garnered unanimous approval and support. From 2013 to 2015, Dr. Lau worked at Armstrong (China) Investment Co. Ltd. as Acoustic Manager/Scientist.
Since 2015, Dr. Lau work for the National University of Singapore and is currently an Associate Professor and Deputy Head (Research) in the Department of Architecture. He is the Programme Director for the M.Sc. in Environmental Management (MEM). Dr. Siu-Kit Lau is a Chartered Engineer (CEng) in the United Kingdom. He currently resides in Singapore.
